Having NLD causes me to, in some instances, get treated differently. The last thing I want to do is think or act like a victim, but over time I’ve realized that in order to help change society’s often-messed-up views of people with LD issues (particularly ones that cause social comprehension difficulties), I need to see the treatment for what it is. Painfully, I’ve need to acknowledge that sometimes society discriminates against people with NLD.
One of my very favorite poets, Marilyn Hacker sometimes writes about various forms of discrimination. Her poem “The Boy” is a great example (see http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-theboy/poem.html for the complete text). While not a poem about NLD, it is about not fitting in and getting treated adversely as a result.
